When I first heard the title of the book, I came up with several theories as to what the secret lives of these wives could be. But I was in for a shocker as my thoughts were a bit off the theme.
Baba Segi (real name Ishola Ajao) is a middle-class business man who is married to four wives; Iya Segi, Iya Tope, Iya Femi and Bolanle. All except Bolanle, had children for him. She, an educated young lady had married an ‘illiterate’ Baba Segi against the wishes of her parents and friends. Her decision was tied to her pursuit of happiness after a devastating rape experience.
Bolanle’s stay in Baba Segi’s house wasn’t an easy one as all the other wives along with their children turned against her, treating her harshly. She however had a connection that ran deep with the oldest daughter, Segi. Disaster comes knocking and Bolanle once again finds herself alone in the storm. Her inability to give birth after series of tests, consultations and treatments raises a lot of questions which slowly reveals the secret lives these wives lived. I believe I have already given you a clue but read the book to find out what it is.
The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives by Lola Shoneyin is a novel that centers around a typical Nigerian polygamous setting. I love the fact that the author navigated different issues which all still reverted to the main theme. It’s bursting with so many lessons from dealing with problems in a polygamous family to establishing the essence of a keen mother-daughter relationship. Lovely book to set your weekend rolling.
